Animals - The students were introduced to research in the lab as they worked on their projects. They used the internet and books to discover facts about an animal and a famous person. The students were very exited about discovering facts on their own, and sharing them with their teachers and classmates. They practiced finding information and putting that information into their own words in note form and sentences. Once they finished researching an animal they worked with their classroom teacher to create interview questions. Each child participated in an interview that was recorded on a Flip video camera and put onto iMovie. iMovie is video editing software application which allows Mac, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 users to edit their own movies.
Rap Songs - The second graders worked on an exciting project where they created and produced rap songs using Garage Band. Garage Band is a software application that is used for creating music or podcasts. It has a range of built-in instruments and sound loops, to create, and record. They first studied Sukot and Sukot words with Aron, and listened to a Sukot rap that Aron created. Shortly after writing their rap in Hebrew they began creating original Sukot rap compositions on Garage Band.
Interviewing- The second graders were also very excited to create personal interviews in Hebrew with their classroom teacher that they recorded using a Flip video camera. Every student wrote questions and answers, and recorded their interviews. They produced their interview on iMovie with their partners, adding music and titles.
Research - When they finished researching their famous person they used their notes to write paragraphs using Microsoft Office to type their work. They focused on writing complete sentences and paragraphs that stayed on topic. They also practiced saving, opening and closing files, editing, and printing.
Tu'Bishvat - For Tu'Bishvat they wrote paragraphs in Hebrew describing a tree they had created. They then used iMovie to record themselves reading their Hebrew paragraph. They included a title and sound effects to their iMovie.
